The Other Side of the Mirror

A Star Trek: Voyager/Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Alternate Universe

The Maquis

The Maquis are made up of members from nearly every planet in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, with the exceptions of Romulus and Ferenginar. There are a great number of Terrans, as well as some Bajorans, Vulcans, and various disenfranchised peoples from other worlds - Bolians, Betazoids, 'non-Klingons', etc.

Because the Klingon people are, for the most part, intensely xenophobic, children born of mixed-race unions are not considered to be Klingon at all. This is difficult for these children, who are generally shunned by other worlds, as well, due to their part-Klingon heritage. These 'non-Klingon' orphans often end up in work camps or prisons, and are sometimes abandoned to starve to death. There are a number of part-Klingon members in the Maquis, as well.

The Maquis are not organized together; each ship is ruled by its individual Captain. Because of this, the Maquis spend a great deal of their time escaping detection by the Empire, as well as perpetrating illegal activities - disrupting sanctioned trade routes, interfering with smuggling and slave trading, and attempting to persuade more Allied planets to join their cause.
